Lab Services at University Urology
Convenient blood and urine testing through our partnership with Labcorp — often the same day as your visit, with clear preparation instructions and direct access to our team.
Before You Arrive
What You Need to Know
Lab testing at University Urology is coordinated through our partnership with Labcorp. Here is what to expect before, during, and after your visit.
What to Bring
Photo ID, your insurance card, and any paper lab order your provider gave you. If you have a current medication list, bring that too — it helps us flag any prep considerations specific to your medications.
Hours & Availability
Most blood draws and urine collections are available during regular clinic hours, Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 4:30 PM. For tests not available in-office or after-hours needs, we will direct you to a nearby Labcorp patient service center.
Insurance & Billing
Labcorp performs testing and bills your insurance directly. Depending on your coverage, you may receive a separate statement from Labcorp. Contact Labcorp billing directly for questions about your lab bill: (800) 845-6167.
How It Works
From Order to Results
The process is straightforward. Here is what happens from the time your provider orders a test to when you receive your results.
Your Provider Places the Order
Your University Urology provider submits an electronic order directly to Labcorp, or gives you a printed order to bring with you. Electronic orders are preferred — you typically do not need to bring anything extra.
Blood Draw or Specimen Collection
We draw blood or collect a urine specimen in-office when available. For tests requiring a dedicated draw site, we direct you to the nearest Labcorp patient service center. Bring your ID, insurance card, and any printed order.
Labcorp Processes the Tests
Labcorp analyzes your specimen and returns results electronically to your University Urology care team. Most routine results are available within 1–3 business days. Some specialized tests, including certain hormone panels and molecular tests, may take longer.
Your Provider Reviews Results With You
Your urologist or APP reviews your results and contacts you with any follow-up needed. You may also view results in your University Urology patient portal and the Labcorp patient portal when they are available. Do not rely on messaging alone for urgent concerns — call us directly.
Test Preparation
Common Urology Lab Tests & How to Prepare
Preparation varies by test. The table below covers the most common tests ordered at University Urology. Your provider’s specific instructions always take precedence over the general guidance below.
Scroll left/right to view full table →
| Test | Preparation | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) | No fasting required. Drink water normally. | Avoid ejaculation and vigorous bicycle riding for 24–48 hours before the draw. Inform us of any recent urinary tract infections, prostate procedures, or catheterization. |
| Testosterone & Hormone Panel | Morning draw preferred (before 10 AM). No fasting required unless instructed. | Testosterone levels are highest in the morning. Follow any medication timing instructions your provider gave you. |
| Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) / Comprehensive (CMP) | Fasting usually not required. Drink water and take routine medications unless told otherwise. | Confirm fasting requirement with your provider’s specific order, as some CMP orders may specify fasting. |
| Lipid Panel | Fasting typically required — 9–12 hours. Water is fine. | Take routine medications with water unless instructed otherwise. Avoid alcohol the night before. |
| Urinalysis & Urine Culture | Hydrate normally. Do not over-hydrate immediately before the test. | A midstream clean-catch sample is preferred for culture. If you have already started antibiotics, let us know — this may affect culture results. |
| 24-Hour Urine Collection (kidney stones / metabolic) | We provide a collection container and written instructions. Keep the jug refrigerated as directed. | Collect all urine over the full 24-hour period and return the sealed, labeled container within the requested window. Discard the first morning void; collect starting with the second. |
| CBC (Complete Blood Count) | No fasting required in most cases. | Routine medications are fine. Inform us of any blood thinners or recent illness. |
| HbA1c & Glucose | No fasting required for HbA1c. Fasting glucose may require 8 hours of fasting. | Confirm fasting requirement with your specific order. Water is always fine. |
Always follow your provider’s specific instructions. If your instructions differ from the table above, follow what your provider told you. If you are unsure, call us before your draw: (865) 305-9254.
